After being
blasted in clubs all over the East Coast on New Year's Eve , "SKIN" by UK
artist Charlotte has already been proclaimed the club anthem of the year. It
garnered two nominations at the Winter Music Conference 1999, an add at WKTU,
number one position on the Billboard club chart and massive airplay on all
mixshows nation wide.
Charlotte is a twenty one year old singer from London who first made a name
for herself in the music industry when she collaborated with a UK producer
Jazzie B on two Soul II Soul albums. Charlotte remembers, "Jazzie B takes me
into his office and says, 'Right, Charlotte, I need some songs for my album,
here'a s dictaphone, here's a mic, and the fridge is over there.' Then he
left me to it. I thought he was joking, but I found out he wasn't. "
Ultimately Charlotte wrote four songs that ended up on the Soul II Soul
album and extended the collaboration to include lead vocals on many of the
songs as well as being a vocalist on many Soul II Soul tours.
Born to a Jamaican father and an English mother, Charlotte grewo up loving a
broad range of music and has been writing and performing for as long as she
can remenmber. "At 16, I really thought I was it, " she admits with a laugh.
"I wrote in a lot of styles and was convinced I could do anything. Then
someone said to me, 'Yeah, that's great Charlotte, but what exactly is it
you want to do? Where's your base? Who are you?' Well its taken me this long
to find out."
Now she's ready to laucb her solo career. She recently signed to Parlophone
in the UK, and to Nervous in the US. Here dubet single "Skin" received a lot
of attention in the UK clubs, but didn't really start to take off until top
New York DJs Junior Vasquez and Victor Calderone started playing "Skin" for
30 minutes sets, recieving massive response from their crowds. A small tour
of NY clubs followed and extablished Charlotte as the freshest new diva on
the NY club scene. Skin features remixes by Keith Littman, Junior Vasquez,
UK production team M&S, and Peter Rauhofer. Her follow-up single, Someday,
will be out in June, and will feature mixes by David Morales and Keith
Littman.
