Diva defines
women of style and sophistication who possess an aura of amazing beauty. Diva
only begins to describe Tommy Boy dance artist Jocelyn Enriquez. Her unique
quality of a fresh, playful voice that is passionate and filled with spirited
youthful energy adds to her description. Yet, despite her tender years, she's
poised to take the music industry by storm.
"Do You Miss
Me," from her second album entitled Jocelyn, was her first bonafied smash hit
which stayed on the radio airplay charts for over 23 weeks. The intriguing
second single "A Little Bit Of Ecstasy" solidified Jocelyn's musical experience
in the dance genre, as the song hit Billboard's Dance sales chart at #1 for 6
weeks straight! She quickly followed this anthem with her third single "Get Into
The Rhythm". "I love to sing," Jocelyn declares. "I hope all of my albums
reflect that."
In 1993,
Jocelyn was discovered by Glenn Gutierrez, who helped the young
diva-in-the-making shape her debut CD Lovely, which garnered favorable
press. Lovely came out in 1994 on Classified Records and contained the
dance hits "I've Been Thinking About You" and "Make This Last Forever." Jocelyn
has made the leap from teen singing sensation to star as she begins recording
her new full-length album. It's a move that she's been preparing for her entire
life.
Born
and raised in San Francisco, Jocelyn was singing by the age of three and often
performed at church and for her family. With her family in her corner, the young
Jocelyn studied voice with the San Francisco Girls Chorus and the San Francisco
Opera Company. Such rigorous training gave Jocelyn a musical foundation that
was invaluable and helped her to unlock the power in her supple voice. "I was a
big fan of Olivia Newton-John, Whitney Houston and Madonna, and learned a lot by
studying their records," she says.
Getting even
more favorable notice were Jocelyn's incredible live stage performances. With
strong radio support, Jocelyn continues to tour extensively, playing throughout
the US and abroad, opening for acts such as Jon Secada, The Fugees, LL Cool J,
Brandy, Mase and Dru Hill. International stardom also takes her through Canada,
Brazil, Philippines, Singapore, Guam and other countries.
In 1998,
Tommy Boy unleashed the soundtrack to "54," where Jocelyn collaborated with
label mate Amber and Strictly Rhythm artist, Ultra Nate. The trio, known as the
Stars On 54, remade the Gordon Lightfoot classic "If You Could Read My
Mind", produced by the Berman Brothers, as the soundtrack's lead single. The
song excited Miramax movie executives so much, they decided to include Stars On
54 in the final scene of the "54" motion picture.
Jocelyn
continued to make her mark on her community and the music industry by winning
the Best Dance Album Award at the 1998 conference for the Association For
Independent Music (AFIM); 1998 Best R&B Artist at the Bay Area Music Awards;
1997 Best Dance Artist at the Bay Area Music Awards; Best Freestyle Single "A
Little Bit Of Ecstasy" at the 1997 Winter Music Conference; and her greatest
achievement as one of five award winning honorees of the 1998 "Bridge Builders"
Asian American Leadership Awards.
After
taking some well-deserved time off to tend to her personal life, Jocelyn
recently went back in the studio to record her new single, "When I Get Close To
You", which went to #1 on the Billboard Club Chart. It will be one of the many
songs on her forthcoming Tommy Boy album.
It is that
sense of who she is and what she wants that sets Jocelyn apart from the fly by
night song birds. Ask Jocelyn how she wants to be perceived and she is direct.
"I know image is so important, but I have to say I'm not trying to be anything
but myself. That's the only way I know how to succeed. And that's how I live my
life and perform my music. True to my dreams and myself.”
Following that success, Jocelyn took a well-deserved break to
search her soul and confirm that she was on the right path. What she found was
that she couldn't stay away from the music industry. Jocelyn stayed in touch
with her fans with appearances, performances and by contributing to various
musical projects. Her short sabbatical helped Jocelyn realize that the music
industry is exactly where she needs to be and she began working on new songs.
Since her last release Jocelyn has matured as an artist, as is apparent on the
new album. It is reflected in the songs she carefully chose and the strength and
intensity of her voice. Over the years Jocelyn has evolved as a businessperson
as well. She recently started her own record label, JEM Entertainment, on which
ALL MY LIFE is being produced. Jocelyn executive produced this album and was
involved in every step of the making of this album. ALL MY LIFE is truly a
culmination of Jocelyn Enriquez' lifetime of experience and love of music. |
