Though
most people today claim Janet Jackson was the first to bare her breast
while performing, Grace Jones shocked audiences by baring hers while
performing at Disney World and has been banned from the park since. Grace
is often described by others as outrageous, unique, and brazen. She can
claim the titles singer, movie star, fashion model, trendsetter,
provocateur, Queen of the Nightclub, and icon and continues to entertain
fans worldwide. Grace’s androgynous appearance and outrageous musical act
has made her a cult favorite and a role model for those who live life on
their own terms.
Born Grace Mendoza in Spanish Town, Jamaica, Grace’s family moved to
Syracuse, New York when Grace was twelve years old. From a young age,
Grace illustrated signs of her unique character. While most little girls
were playing with dolls and having tea parties, Grace was busy being a
tomboy and hanging out with boys. Grace’s Junior High school counselor
reported that she was social sick. In her early twenties she signed up for
the Wilhemina Modeling Agency in New York. Her exotic looks and height
quickly made her one of the most requested models in the world and soon
after she began a Jet setting lifestyle that often took her to Europe.
She
relocated to Paris, prospering as a model and gracing the covers of Elle,
Vogue, and Der Stern. I enjoyed fame as a model, but music was my
inspiration. I began singing at parties, on table-tops in Paris, and
someone saw a chance of making some money. So I guess I got lucky during
the 70’s she was a regular at the legendary New York disco, Studio 54. In
1977, Island Record signed her to her first record titled "Portfolio". The
album sold well and her hit single, "I Need a Man", became a 70's anthem
popular with gay men. Other albums would follow during the 80’s while she
shifted her focus to film, appearing in Conan the Destroyer with Arnold
Schwarzenegger. While filming, he complained that she was too tough. Grace
was later bestowed the part of being the famous Bond Girl in A View to a
Kill with her then fiancé Swedish actor Dolph Lundgren.
Her wild stage antics are legendary, often appearing on stage with male
strippers, and outrageous outfits, live lions and leopards. Her biggest
success as a recording star has been her album of Slave to the Rhythm with
the singles Pull Up to the Bumper and My Jamaican Guy. She appeared in
Boomerang in 1992 where she played a very intimidating fashion model
opposite Eddie Murphy. Grace’s legend continues as she entertains
audiences worldwide with her exciting and provocative stage show. Grace
expects to release a new album in 2007.
